KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry revealed that about 35% of teachers teaching Science and Mathematics in schools nationwide have been found to lack a good command of the English language.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail said such a setback in the teaching profession was discovered during surveys conducted in schools that were selected randomly, to gauge the standard of teachers who are tasked to teach both the subjects in English.
"Teachers who were tested were found to be less proficient in the language and were found to be unable to express the right teaching methods so that students could easily comprehend," he said here on Thursday.
He said students were found to have the potential to grasp the language promptly but these teachers were unable to coach them.
"This situation would actually be negative to the students who would be unable to acquire the contents of both the subjects," he said.
Razali said the survey also divulged these teachers’ lack of enthusiasm and dedication to enhance their command in the English language.
The Government, he said, had provided all types of assistance to these teachers to improve their command of English, including monetary facilities to reference books and tuition classes.
"We found that teachers used these monetary aids provided by the Ministry for other unrelated purposes," he added.
Razali said the Ministry will continue to conduct intensive classes, including sending the teachers overseas so that they achieve a better proficiency in the English
language.
